This is a diary dating from the American Civil War. The book itself is a page-a-day diary for the year of 1868, but many entries have other dates written in many years in advance, so it's hard to date exactly when some parts were written. You'll see a few angry entries about someone tearing out pages to light his pipe(!). The organization is rather chaotic, and the handwriting can be hard to read. A large number of the entries are merely records of who died during different battles. Many different types of ink are used, presumably using whatever was available. One ink is particularly interesting as it seemed to be highly corrosive. On some pages, the words seem to be almost burned into the paper, leaving letter-shaped holes. There is a small pocket in the back of the diary, but nothing is stored inside. Only marked pages are scanned, and a few pages where ink bled through. Other pages are either unmarked or torn out and are not shown here. Scans are at 300 dpi. The low-res version is approximately 400×300 pixels. |
